The daily reading of Scripture. One verse. Maybe two? Are you a miserly reader?  

Reading an entire Gospel diligently allows patterns to emerge: repeated questions, escalating opposition, misunderstandings among the disciples, fulfillment of Scripture, and the meaning of Jesus’ identity. These connections disappear when the text is encountered only as isolated sentences.

A short quotation can be a gracious doorway into the Bible. The problem begins when the doorway is mistaken for the whole house. The fault is not in reading one verse. One verse can sustain a person through grief, awaken repentance, or remain in the heart for years. 

This Monday devotion favors brevity, but convenience can quietly become the standard when verses are detached from their setting. Scripture can become a collection of encouraging sayings instead of the unfolding story of creation, covenant, incarnation, cross, resurrection, and new creation. 

 Attend to the whole testimony of Scripture to hear Christ faithfully. One verse at a time. 

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Lead me to become the kind of reader and person who can hear Christ faithfully because I have learned to attend to the whole testimony of Scripture. May I remain and continue to abide in Your word—not visiting it occasionally in fragmented parts. Amen
