At Home, Travel Far

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, look to tomorrow, rest this afternoon.” -Charlie Brown, Peanuts character by Charles Schulz

“Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” –Psalm 103:2

I am taking a trip. The fictional town of Mitford is a vacation destination for my mind and soul. What better to do in the summertime than slow down and read?  You might be hard pressed to find a cozier selection than At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon. It is overdue as a re-read for me. In the quaint village of Mitford, Father Tim, a devoted Episcopalian rector, embraces the simple pleasures of life, eats at Main Street Grill, and savors each day.

Characters include a dog, a boy, lovable laughable parishioners, a new neighbor, and the red-headed expressive part-time secretary Emma Garrett.

Everyday challenges within the church are sometimes tackled in gentle conversations with Father Tim such as:

“Well, I’m going to church. But I’ve got to tell you that it’s full of hypocrites,” says Pete Jamison, a recent convert to the Christian faith to Father Tim. The rector replies with this advice, “My friend, if you keep your eyes on Christians, you will be disappointed every day of your life. Your hope is to keep your eyes on Christ.”

Certain books become inner anchors. Places we return to for comfort, clarity or strength. A book and its words stays the same, but you don’t. Old words and new insights deepens the appreciation for a story. Slow down. Choose your book.

Psalm 103 might be a quality selection to review.

“Forget not all his benefits.”

Prayer:

After re-reading Psalm 103, I noticed David calls on all of creation including his own soul to “Praise the Lord.” Angels, heavenly hosts, people, everyone! It is like walking through my farm’s garden. I recognized the path, but I see new blooms!

Praise the Lord, my soul;

 all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
