Pass the Salt

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched–they must be felt in the heart.” -Helen Keller

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? …You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”- Matthew 5:13,14

Salt. Something the ancients and modern man understand with commonality.

“He is not worth his salt” is a common expression. It originated in ancient Greece where salt was traded for slaves. Roman soldiers were paid “salt money,” from which we take our English word, “salary.”

I recently spoke to a friend on the phone.  Her parents were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and she and her family were visiting their home. Voices were in the background mixed with laughter. Memories of good times, social gatherings, and their impact on friends and the community entered my mind as I pondered their union.  The couple, Rob and Carol, have influenced many people. This Christ-following duo has shown me permanence, loyalty, durability, fidelity, and usefulness.

Carol is now caring for Rob who has ALS. An obvious challenge to the everlasting promise “for better or worse.”

The sweet sounds I heard from family gathered on their porch as we spoke were penetrating and powerful, reaching into my heart. Even under challenging circumstances, they had not lost their flavor or brilliance.

They are the salt of the earth.

Christians bring salvation and eternal life to those around them by the way they live and act toward one another. Through thoughts, affections, words, and actions, the penetrating salty love of the gospel diffuses among others.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, let us be Your salt and light in this world. Let our words and actions have a great impact on those around us. Lord, we want to be worth our salt! Amen
