Flower Power

Let us examine flowers in Scripture.

Flowers in the Bible symbolize divine beauty, spiritual purification, God’s provision, and the fleeting nature of life.

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. -Matthew 6:28-29

If God adorns the magnificent lilies and they surpass all that King Solomon did, surely he will sustain humanity with care, and we can trust him with our keeping. The flowers listed in the Bible are penned for a reason. The ancient blooms bring delight to our minds when we envision them; they fill our senses with our own experiences. Charles Spurgeon observed that flowers are “sermons in color,” declaring God’s artistry without words.

A lily can become our symbol of strength in adversity. When I was ill about 25 years ago, my sister sent me a large bouquet of lilies. I set the magnificent lilies on my dining room table, with their fragrance wafting through my home. I would walk downstairs in the morning, look towards the arrangement, and it would fill my heart and mind with joy. To this day, the lily reminds me to count on God.

Pray:

🎶For lo the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come. 🎶 (from Song of Solomon 2)

What flower is special to you?
