A Little On Hedge

Linus: “There are three things I’ve learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.” -from The Great Pumpkin, by Charles Schulz

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. John 14:1

What do you do when you are having a breakdown?

You may think turmoil and chaos are new. Or that it is increased in intensity in this age. Not so. Scripture is surprisingly honest about anxiety—it never treats it as a modern anomaly, but as a recurring human condition that faith must meet with trust. The Bible’s realism about worry and its repeated command to rely on God instead of our own understanding weave through both Testaments.

Anxiety is an old companion of humanity. Elijah flees into the desert, exhausted and afraid. God does not rebuke his fear but meets him with food, silence, and renewed purpose. (1 Kings 19) Jesus tells His followers not to be anxious about tomorrow. The crowd He spoke to lived under Roman occupation and daily scarcity—so His command was spoken into real fear, not comfort. (Matt 6)

John 14 is the antidote to fear: a promise of presence, preparation, and peace. Jesus promises the Spirit will dwell with believers and a place is being readied with the Father. Christ’s own peace anchors the soul.

Perhaps our unease arises from desiring a promise of absolute security: money in the bank, health of an Olympian, youthful appearance in our old age, and family unity throughout life. The Bible doesn’t promise a life without concern; it promises God’s presence.

“Do not let your heart be troubled” is not a command to suppress emotion; it is an invitation to orient trust toward Someone rather than something. The disciples would not understand Jesus’ words until later, and we often live in that same place. When we are on “hedge”, remember his presence.

Pray these words of comfort:

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.- Isaiah 41:10

When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. -Psalm 56:3

Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. -1 Peter 5:7

You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.  Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock eternal.-Isaiah 26:3-4

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”- Hebrews 13:5-6

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me -Psalm 23:4

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.- 2 Timothy 1:7
