Many a man thinks he has an open mind, when its merely vacant.
When checking a microphone, you may assess it by saying, “Testing, Testing 1,2,3.” This is what the Bereans did when they heard Paul’s gospel message. They tested it. Gospel writer Luke tells us they examined the Scripture to make sure Paul’s message was not a distorted one.
“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Acts 17:11
The doctrine of Christ does not fear inquiry; instead, ambassadors of the gospel desire their message to be fully examined.
Martin Luther, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, G.K. Chesterton, A.W. Tozer, R.C. Sproul, and John MacArthur all have preached to invite inquiry. These preachers state their views with clarity and passion, and believers have tested their message.
In the early twentieth century, Tozer criticized lukewarm Christianity and shallow worship, while MacArthur publicly critiques charismatic theology, liberal theology, and social justice movements in the church today. Their styles are unapologetic in the pulpit and pen.
It is wise to evaluate the measure of what is preached today. We are to guard from the pride of thinking we know it all and the laziness of accepting things without discernment. Testing, Testing, 1,2,3…
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving us Your Word as a sure and steady guide. Give me a heart like the Bereans—eager to receive truth, yet careful to measure all things against the light of Scripture. Help me to listen with humility and test with wisdom. Amen
