“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.” -Roger Miller, (1936-1992) American singer-songwriter
The enemy of spirituality is self-centered busyness. To labor for daily bread and shelter takes a standard of hours each day. Beyond these hours remain ours to fill.
The power of distraction by the hustle of life in God’s economy can be a severe failure in our mission for the gospel. A petty annoyance, a look to the fancy, and poor goal management are a few things that can lead to intentional restlessness.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta often repeated:
The fruit of silence is prayer.
The fruit of prayer is faith.
The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service.
The fruit of service is peace.
Don’t get caught up in self-worship. Self-worship has been the biggest busy button since the beginning of time. Eve was busy second-guessing God and sharing her bad choices with her mate, “Look at me, I have consumed the best fruit and I am now sharp-witted to have eaten from the middle tree.”
Instead of using Eve’s recipe for indulgence, imitate the Nobel Peace Prize winner and savor her fruit salad this week.
Prayer:
Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, O most merciful Redeemer and Friend, Identify the hindrances in life that keep distracting me and convict my heart to cast them out. Grant that I may see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, day by day. Amen (inspired by Book of Common Prayer, Richard of Chichester)
