“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.” -Hal Borland, 1900-1978 American writer, journalist
Monday-blah day. The work week begins, and off to school for the kids. Five days until the weekend. In 1966, singer-songwriter John Phillips wrote the song “Monday, Monday” because the person he loved had left him on that day. It became a hit for his group The Mamas and The Papas and here are some of the lyrics:
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day…Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes A-you can find me cryin’ all the time.
Monday, can’t trust that day…How could you leave and not take me?
…But Monday mornin’ couldn’t guarantee that Monday evenin’ you would still be here with me.
Like Phillips, many deem any other day of the week better. Consider the ones who witnessed the crucifixion. They could have had a sing-along with The Mamas and The Papas, “You can find me cryin’ all the time…We thought Monday evenin’ you would still be here with me.”
There are those who today walk into Easter Monday after celebrating Sunday, barely remembering the march through Holy Week: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, and Sunday with the empty tomb. They are still asking, “Can IT be trusted?” Will I allow myself to maintain an Easter frame of mind and believe in the risen Christ?
“Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?.. Jesus said to her, “Mary.” -John 20
This Monday is different. It commemorates the day Jesus was alive after being resurrected from the dead and demonstrating himself to his disciples and many other witnesses—no more crying. No day is pointless because the resurrected Jesus fills them all with his power. Easter is a 50-day season and today is the first weekday of that season.
🎶Monday, Monday…Bah-da bah-da-da-da.🎶
Pray: Lord Christ, You laid death low, and brought us new life. Grant that we may walk today in this new life with assurance. Amen.
