Light On

“”Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only Light can do that.” -Martin Luther King Jr

“We’ll leave the light on for you.”

Since 1986, Tom Bodett, an NPR radio personality, has closed every ad for Motel 6 with this phrase. When Bodett ad-libbed the line while in the recording studio, this slogan has been a lasting success. Why is this? A light in the window assures someone is home and will welcome you when arriving, even if it is late.

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it…There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.” John 1:4,5,9

Thousands of the Christmas Village light-up buildings line the shelves and mantles of homes this December, reflecting a desire to depict our image of a perfect Christmas in miniature. Perhaps a  John the Baptist figurine should be placed on the corner, reminding those who pass by to repent. Everything has been made straight in this imaginary land, and we are ready for Christ in the tiny little village.

I love these small-scale buildings and often leave one on the shelf for months –reminding me of Bodett’s phrase.

Reflect the Light of Life, and make your home a shining, inviting place.

 Leave The Light on.

Prayer:

Lord, Source of all Light, may we ever live in your love, turn our thoughts to what is holy, and be your bright witness before all the world with your guidance. Amen
