Fix Something

“It’s the ability to choose that makes us human.” -Madeleine L’Engle, 1918-2007, American writer

“..One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford—she gave her all.”  Mark 12: 41-44 The Message

The Wall Street Journal now offers advice on how to fix something in your life in 15 minutes or less. One column in the series provides donation advice.

( 15 Minute Fixes, Nov. 13, 2024) Authoritatively, the subheading reads, “Give a damn.”  Their words, not mine. It seems generosity works best when you mean it and better when it gives you a high, “When you’re genuinely excited about the gift, the good feelings linger…”  The author also suggests giving your time. They advise two hours and propose that volunteering reduces stress. I suppose there are some activities approved greater than 15 minutes.

A feel-good quick fix is the upside-down version of Christianity. Believers always care about their stewardship, which fills their way of life. The 15-minute fix will not satisfy. Volunteering is a way to carry God’s love into the world, which may explain why it reduces stress and builds resilience. Giving is an act; stewardship is an attitude. The Pharisees gave without being generous—the 15-minute fix. The poor widow was generous with little since it was a way of life.

Rich, poor, and in-between, we are called to make God our highest priority.

That is giving…Giving a Damn. My words.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you call us to be stewards of your Abundance. Help us to fix our lives and honor you through generosity. Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing your message to those we serve. Amen
