“If it weren’t for the rocks in its bed, the stream would have no song.” -Carl Perkins, (1932-1998) American guitarist, songwriter, and singer best known for Blue Suede Shoes
In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thess 5:18
This verse can be quite annoying. Being grateful for suffering does not make sense. When bad things happen– people throw rocks at God.
There have been times when I have thought I might help Paul write this sentence differently–give him a little edit: “In most things give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Then, my better self takes over, and I know that when Scripture gives a directive, it is for our benefit. Gratitude impacts every part of life.
Rock throwing may seem practical when angry and miserable and the psalmists did write many laments, which is rock throwing in verbal form, but they ended up in praise and gratitude after tossing a few pebbles skyward.
Giving thanks in all circumstances :
-Reminds us God is always close by
-It aligns our will with God’s will
-Helps us understand we depend on God-not people
-It serves as a witness to others
-Brings joy to life (no gratitude–grumpy!)
-Gives proper perspective; we do not know what God knows
Throw a rock –and give thanks for every little thing.
Prayer
We thank you, Almighty God, that you concern yourself with us and bind us to yourself through your deeds and help. May I live on a higher plane and follow you, giving thanks for all things. Amen
