“We win by tenderness. We conquer by forgiveness.” -Frederick William Robertson, (1816-1853) English Theologian

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him…“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always  with me, and everything I have is yours.” Luke 15:20,31

Take into consideration a prodigal child can be restored.

Over dinner, I asked friends, “What do you wish you were forgiven for in your life, and who have you not forgiven that you should?” Conversation became sparse, and the question created awkwardness. Oops. Then, slowly, an exchange started. Meaningful dialogue began on the role faith played in the deeply held need for forgiveness. For Believers, it was voiced that the Savior’s forgiveness was not enough to shake the clay from their feet–they wanted forgiveness from those they wronged and remorse before an absolution was handed out.

Going deeper, I probed, “Have you forgiven everyone?” Some side-eyeing ensued.

Excuses came up, “Some wrongs cannot be forgiven.” “Some don’t even know they did wrong.” Silence emerged once the gravity of the unforgiveness set in.

Jesus taught, lived, and died forgiveness.

The diners concluded: Do not react immediately to strange and unsettling things. Humble yourself and promote unity for it is just and protects from narrow-mindedness. Unforgiveness leaves an unhealthy residue on the soul that embitters. Look to bestow grace. It is necessary and appropriate.

No heartburn that evening, but our hearts were quite warm.

“They said to each other, “When he talked with us along the road and explained the Scriptures to us, didn’t it warm our hearts?” Luke 24:32 CEV

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, May I remember you are with me. You await every penitent person who strays with a ring and robe. When I am wronged, allow me to lift the grievance to you and forgive without constraint. This is my humble prayer because I cannot do it without you. Kick the clay from my feet to understand your grace and not be hampered by pride. Amen
