“There is something in humility which strangely exalts the heart.” -St Augustine
Umble Pie is the original name of a pie made in the 14th century in the UK from the heart and liver of animals. It was considered inferior food and was often served to the poor or persons out of favor. The phrase “Eat Humble/Umble Pie” came to be used when someone had to apologize publicly for a mistake and was “humbled.”
Humility is taught in Scripture.
*Seek the LORD, all who are humble and follow his commands…Zephaniah 2:3
*Clothe yourselves with…humility… Colossians 3:12
*…Keep a humble attitude…1 Peter 3:8
*For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14:11
“Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself.” -Charles H. Spurgeon
We have nothing of which we should boast but much to induce humility. Proud people think of themselves and imagine that all the world thinks about them, too. They view every wheel that moves in their circle is related to them. Pride must have a fall. Ask Pharaoh, Hezekiah, Nebuchadnezzar, and Herod.
It is stunning to read about Christ–sinless, fully divine and fully human, in Philippians:
“he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” (2:8)
We can marvel at Paul’s remarkable words in which he says that the Son of God took on the creaturely virtue of humility —to death–on a cross.
It is an honor to declare Jesus Christ as Lord to the glory of God, revering His humility. Be humble, love Christ and love others.
Eat humble pie and savor the goodness. 🥧
Prayer:
O Jesus! Meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed,
From the desire of being loved,
From the desire of being extolled,
From the desire of being honored,
From the desire of being praised,
From the desire of being preferred to others,
From the desire of being consulted,
From the desire of being approved…
…Deliver me Jesus.
