“Every man should pull a boat over a mountain once in his life.” -Werner Herzog, German filmmaker, author
Sometimes, we are wavering in our resolve to be faithful. If left to our own strength, we are unable to make it.
Somedays are diamonds. Somedays are stones.
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:24
Jesus, returning from the Transfiguration came across a large crowd stirred up. The disciples were trying to cast out a demon from a boy but had failed. Jesus said, “You unbelieving generation, . . . how long shall I stay with you? … Bring the boy to me” (Mark 9:19). The boy was brought to Jesus, and Jesus assured them “everything is possible for one who believes” (verse 23). The father openly admits his belief and unbelief. Jesus spoke to the unclean spirit and cast him out.
Jesus later coaches the disciples, “This kind can come out only by prayer” Mark 9:29
Biblical commentator Matthew Henry (1662-1714) writes about this passage:
“Those that complain of unbelief must look up to Christ for grace to help them against it, and his grace will be sufficient for them…The disciples must not think to do their work always with the same ease; some services call for more than ordinary pains.
Mr. Henry reminds us today that much is promised by believing and extra effort may be required on our part with God’s supernatural help.
Moving mountains may require “more than ordinary pains.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
When I waiver in my belief, hear, see, and help me! Strengthen my faith to move mountains so that I can do all that I am called to do. Amen
