“Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” -Karl Barth
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Be cheerful no matter what” (MSG).
“Rejoice always!” (HCSB).
“Be full of joy all the time” (NLB).
“Be happy in your faith all the time” (Phillips).
All the translations remind the reader ALWAYS to be joyful.
Would it help if it said most of the time?
The angels appeared to the shepherds when Jesus was born and proclaimed:
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:10, 11
The good news is reason for JOY.
Jew, Gentile, men, women, shepherd, king, slave, sick and healthy are covered under “all people.” In his last intimate moments with the disciples, Jesus gave them encouragement for the challenge ahead, “…But take heart! I have overcome the world,” – not occasionally, all the time.
I read a list of things people often complain about: slow internet, in-laws, traffic, co-workers and bad TV. Complaining breeds discontentment. A joyless life is not a Christian life.
If you choose not to find joy in the snow you will have less joy in your life, but still the same amount of snow.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Your presence is a celebration. Good times are evidence of your love as are trials. Today I praise you for the joy I find in you alone, you are always here, ever present and ever-caring. I meditate on your Word and lean on your grace. Lord, renew me, refresh me and secure my heart to overflowing. Amen
