“In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.” -Paul Harvey
Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. Matthew 22:37-38
Year A, Year B, Year C
The liturgical church calendar marks this week the last of Ordinary Time, Year A. This chart of days and months follows the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The ancient church promoted fixed rites and ceremonies that included communion, prayers, hymns, and even handwashing to direct worship experiences. Even without a formal guide new believers had a uniformity in worship at an early date, using Last Supper descriptions and gatherings in the book of Acts.
Building on Israel’s pattern of seasonal celebrations, the church developed a liturgical (easy liturgical definition: relating to public religious service) calendar that organized around the events of Jesus Christ.
The church revolves around Jesus, Son of God, just as the earth revolves around planet sun. The calendar has been established to unify the body of Christ to celebrate worship integrated as one body.
It is a cycle of THREE (year A,B,C) with assigned Scripture and hymns.
I call it the TRINITY CYLE– a name I made up. My naming thoughts: if you read the Scripture and pray the prayers, sing the hymns over the three years–Father, Son and Holy Spirit will bless you!
No ordinary time is spent in worship.
Something I did not make up: Christians live in this time to proclaim the greatest commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul and all your mind.”
Notice there are three ways listed? A. heart B. soul C.mind
Every part of our being is used to love God.
The Christian WAY of Living Matters. In this era of moral confusion and social fragmentation we are summoned by God to live holy by loving Him.
Heart. Soul. Mind. IT IS EASY AS A, B, C
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Imprint the gospel on my heart, soul and mind through the cycles of hearing and reading your word in every season. Teach me to know your ways each day.
The LORD says, “Those who live in the shelter of the most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Amen (-from Psalm 91)
